My 7 Problems With Social Media Management – And Your Problems As Well. Thank you for the replies

Thank you so much for all the replies regarding what you’d change about the way you publish to social media.

I can see that many of you have lots of things you’d change.

Trust me when I say: I’ve been there. I still am there: even after 10 years of being a social media manager (I had a musician brand for which I managed their MySpace page. Yeah, I’m old school like that)

The really good news is that: about 90% of the things you’ve mentioned will soon be solved. In most cases, 100% of your problems with social media will be solved.

I was super excited that you replied. Me, Ana and the rest of the team went through everything and we’re excited about our next few weeks together with you.

You see: I knew that it would be a good question to ask. 10 years of being a social media manager and there are still a lot of things that I would change about the way I do social media.

I said that you must’ve felt the same way. And most of you did.

So what did I try to do in all these years to make my social media manager life better?

1) tried all the possible platforms out there. I knew first hand when UberVU got acquired by HootSuite because I was using them both. About Buffer I’ve already written a lot. There’s so many more I’ve tried. None of them managed to work like I work, nor how our Agency’s customers want the work to be done.

2) I’ve helped finance with money from Angel Investors and Venture Capitalists some promising startups in the field of Social Media Management.

Yes, I did go that far. I said that if I advise these teams with all my experience and all my known problems regarding Social Media, then maybe I can help them build the amazing product that I was so desperately waiting for.

At first, I’ve been a trusted adviser to one of these two companies. I really wanted to help them build the perfect product, so they can solve all of the problems I felt.

They seemed to be onto something. So, I’ve used my network and helped them raise a pre-seed round. Sadly, soon after the investment, they just enjoyed the money and the status which came with being a funded startup and they did more “conferencing” than actual work on the product. 

Of course, this made me step out of my role as Adviser when I saw how poorly they handled things and the fact that they were turning their backs on their own dream. They no longer cared about helping small businesses be awesome at Social Media Management. They just wanted the attention, the interviews, the networking, the feeling that they were somebody.

It wasn’t the end of that story. After a while they raised a new funding round from a well known international fun.

However, this didn’t change their determination. It didn’t make them want to do better for their customers.

During all this time, I was already helping out another team with lots of advice on social media management. Now, these are guys were something else. I wished that I had just started with them. One of Squirrly’s investors saw that I liked them. He was already interested in investing.

Therefore, this was the second Social Media startup I’ve mentored and helped secure an investment.

Of course, it helped me a lot, too. I could see a lot of people expressing their concerns and trouble with these platforms.

Basically, I’ve done a lot of product development on their products, even though I didn’t get any money out of it myself. Not even shares in the companies.

WHY?

Because I only ever cared about finally getting my hands on a great social media product that would end my frustrations.

We came close with this second team, but their solution still doesn’t answer all of my concerns.

It doesn’t answer your concerns, either.

How did this journey continue?

3) I started developing this thing myself.

Yes, that’s right.
I wanted to stay away from this, because last year we launched Squirrly SEO 2017, then Squirrly SEO 2018, then Squirrly SEO 2018: Steve. I guess you can imagine how busy I already am.

Let’s not talk about ContentLook or Starbox, that were also under development.
This year, you’ve seen Briefcase and the Business Plan already. Giant upgrades to our product.

Destiny had a say in this. I met an awesome developer, a team Leader (a true Leader this time).

Together with him it was a LOT easier to work on a social media product than ever before, because we were on the same page and we focused exactly on everything that all the other platforms got wrong.

He has a very similar story to mine, when it comes to trying out all the other social media tools out there and trying to help third party companies get their products right.

We’re still ironing out the last details, after extensive testing with customers of our Agency and customers of his Agency.

This tech partnership is awesome. We’ve both learned a lot about the best ways in which we can fix all of these social media scheduling problems.

From the small concerns:
a) I publish on WordPress. now I want my post to go out to all my Social Media Profiles, without me lifting a finger.
b) Evergreen content publishing
c) make sure there’s always something going out to my accounts, without me checking in every day.
to bigger ones:
d) organizing my social media team
e) organizing all social media customers of the agency
f) creating a fully detailed social media scheduling plan, based on current events, different time slots on different social media profiles
g) curating brand new content from relevant and trust-worthy news blogs, 100% personalized for my niche.

Outstanding- NO BRAINER (from somebody who already uses the product)

Guys, if you do SEO, don’t even hesitate. Appsumo has brought some excellent SEO deals, including deals that do content analysis, audit reports, etc. NONE of them are as deep as Website Auditor.

I’ve used the full SEO Powersuite for a while now, and love it. I pay regularly for search engine updates, and it is worth it. It is SOOOOOO deep, and Website Auditor is a great tool. I purchased this to ease the yearly search updates cost a bit (I’ll continue to renew the rest, unless…….).

Whether you need to analyze keyword consistency, technical issues, and much more. Audits can be page level, or for your full site. You can even compare how your keyword efficiency with competitors (or even do a full audit on their site).

And you get the white label on everything. Ummm…….did somebody say Sumo-sized?

Highly recommended, and for $39, even better. Just get it.

I do wish they could somehow offer discounts for other products in the suite since it would really entice those who don’t already have them, but that’s just a personal thought. Get this deal.

Five tacos for the steal price; TEN for the most in-depth SEO auditing tool I’ve used

Just bought 🙂 We’ve actually been using the free version of Website Auditor for a while – it’s top notch! Combines the best parts of Screaming Frog, Xenu and DeepCrawl all together.

Pros:
– crawls literally everything in a way you want it (all links and html tags you can imagine – with or without robots.txt instructions, has an option of JavaScript-enabled crawling, offers support for sites with authentication, and many more options)
– has a very nice summary module with all errors and warnings with an in-depth overview of each factor (and there’s tons of them including quite sophisticated stuff like redirect chains)
– integrates many different off-page & social metrics
– has a WYSIWIG content editor with your optimization score recalculated ‘on the fly’
– TF-IDF analysis module for optimizing for semantic search
– good-looking, easy to understand reports (this version being offered can even save them as PDF or responsive HTML, so you can read them on your desktop or even mobile, send them over to clients, etc)
– this Enterprise version allows to export everything
– it’s desktop – thus you don’t have to wait for scheduled crawls (which often limit you up to ‘one crawl/week’)
– we’ve been running it on both our Macbooks and Windows laptops
– pretty quick, especially for smaller sites
– very nice support people who where helping us even with the free version

Cons:
– since it’s desktop, you need to install it on your office desktop, laptop, home computer separately
– can be memory consuming for big websites (though I think they offer a workaround on their site)
– has a steep learning curve and might take some time to understand all its features if you haven’t used any tools like this

And it’s lifetime access to the enterprise version for just 39$ – can’t believe it. Thank you for bringing it up here guys!

Incredible Deal!

I have been using WebSite Auditor for about 8 years. I own/run a web development company and this is essential for my work. It is a great tool that has so many features it’s mind-blowing. This deal is really incredible because even after purchasing the software all those years ago, the Algo Updates are still a few hundred bucks a year for just this one part of the suite.
When I saw the Algo Updates were included for lifetime, I didn’t think twice about purchasing this deal.
I would also jump on a deal if they also offered Rank Tracker (hint-hint WebSite Auditor Team!).

I’m an SEO consultant and I’ve used Website Auditor & the other SEO Powersuite apps daily for the past several years and couldn’t imagine doing my work without them. What I like:
– custom reporting, nice done, could have more options to create own reports not only customise this what is predefined
– speed with normal crawl, its fast (or very fast!)
– Google Analytics integration
– tags, records on page level

What i dont like:
– speed, Crawl with javascript can takes ages and You cant pause it to start other tasks
– no pause continue option

What is a real issue for me:
– With crawling subdomains I cant find a settings to show full URL in PAGE column, there is and additional info with subdomain name after slug, but I cant sort according to subdomains
– from this same reason filtering dont works

If you have large site with many subdomains its like one big bucket with every element in, hard to filter and compare.

Could You confirm “issue” or give me a solution how to filter or group pages according to subdomain?

In general look like great tool, useful and tool value/price makes a _excelent_ deal.

Although you don’t see the full subdomain URLs themselves, the sorting and filtering does take them into account. If you’d like to create a filter for a subdomain, hit the filter button, select “Page > Contains” and enter your subdomain. This will work.

And there’s more good news: in mid December, we’ll be releasing a software update that will let you choose to display the full URLs 🙂

Great news about filtering with subdomain. I try to filter and im my case filter fails. I have typical dubdomain “blog” and also a lot of blog posts have this same keyword in page title/ URL = Messy results.

Think about stop/continue option as this is a must for large projects (or you have to buy VPS)

@lostpiligrim – Im working with ecommerce daily, most of ecommerce engines are old HTML frameworks (Magento, Shopify, Opencart, Woocommerce, etc) so speed will be similar in any tool (its more your connection speed and number of requests per second).

For modern Javascript frameworks (React, Node, Angular, etc) ScreamingFrog works for me faster, what probably could be improved as both tools use chromium library as a rendering engine.

Okay – put simply, this deal has no place in the real world. It’s just silly good. The product on offer is very, very good and you appear to get all the bells and whistles.

Technical Issues

First of: The support of this company is awesome. Really great.

Sadly, as of yet it does not work for my site but the support is working on it.

Obviously, I have to turn the security on my website off. I get that. But I also have to turn off the security on my PC.

Malwarebytes detects malicious process “trojan agent” and deletes part of the software. Because the detection is not related to a file of the tool but a process, svhost, I am unable to “ignore” the detection. That’s where real viruses go too.

Basically, I have to turn off the security on my PC and re-install if I use the program. And then it still does not work with my main site.

I am sure this is an awesome product but I feel it’s unfortunate that a program that does nothing on my PC beside using CPU is programmed in a way that leads to problems with a popular and widely used Malware program.

And the whole: “Deinstall that” “Install Java manually” “turn thiis off” feels a bit 2003, especially when it still doesn’t work.

Again, I am sure it’s otherwise a great product and the support would have made it work for me.

I’m a casual user. I am not comfy with the unignorable svhost detection and re-install every time thing.

In 2007, Jeff Lawson and 2 other guys founded Twilio.
They wanted to provide voice APIs, like to a dozen of other odd startups in this space.
Investors said it won‘t fly: wrong product, wrong audience.

Today their company is worth $2.94 Billion.

What steps did they take to achieve $2.94 Billion?

In 2008, they launch their product right after the 2008 financial crisis had hit.
Nobody knew them and nobody trusted them. So the first app, RickRoll – based on their API, they create by themselves.
This app gets major press coverage and Twilio is noticed by investor Dave McClure.

In 2009, they raise $4.7M.
Unlike other startups in this space, they hyper-focused on developers, providing a simple way to add voice calls in their businesses.
They were growing a community of developers. Here‘s how:
1. They hire a traveling team of developer evangelists.
2. Sponsor hackathons.
3. Publish world-class documentation on the website.
4. Offer in-depth coding tutorials on the blog.

In 2010, they allow web app developers to add SMS-based functionality to their web apps.

In May 2010, at the TechCrunch Disrupt hackathon, GroupMe app uses Twilio‘s text messaging product to facilitate group chat. Eventually, GroupMe is acquired by Skype for $85 million.
The success of GroupMe was the inspirational story that helped cement Twilio’s story in the app ecosystem.

In 2010, 500 Startups earmarks $250,000 for a Twilio Micro Fund, which invests in startups using Twilio.

In November 2010, they raise $12M.

In March 2011, AppSumo creates a discounted bundle of SaaS products that includes credit for using Twilio.

In July 2011, They offer developers the option to use all IP communications as well as traditional phone and mobile networks.

In October 2011, when Uber is still a tiny company, they join Twilio. Fast forward 5 years – they will pay over $30M/year to Twilio.

In December 2011, Twilio raises $17M (Series C) to expand the communications platform worldwide.

In February 2012, Twilio lets iOS app makers add VoIP as a feature.

In July 2012, they activate global SMS service.

In December 2013, SendGrid announces tie-ins to the popular Twilio APIs that enable SMS text and voice integration in mobile apps.

In June 2013, Twilio raises a $70 million Series D.

After that, they started to acquire other startups.

In 2016, IPO – They raise $150 million at a $1.2 billion valuation.

In 2017, their company is worth $2.94B.

For you to build your sales process, you need to identify a Core Customer profile to go after and prospect against.

Once you have that, here’s a sample email you can use to reach out cold and kick off the conversation.

That should at least get your foot in the door…

… then you continue diving deeper with the prospect around the following info using the B.A.N.T. framework:

  1. Budget: Is there a budget set aside?
  2. Authority: Who is involved in the decision?
  3. Need: Do they have a problem?
  4. Timeline: Is this a now or later thing?
  5. Etc…

Once you’ve got that, then you want to schedule a demo for them with one of your Account Execs or what I like to call my “Product Specialists” (nicer word for salesperson :).

That’s the outbound sales model.

Go out there, add value, connect, identify needs and try and schedule them with a product specialist for a demo.

One where the prospect pulls out their credit card on the spot to get signed up and deployed.

But before that, you’ve got to do some homework…

  1. Who is your Core Customer?
  2. Do you have a list of them? (if not, I can help you below)
  3. Do you have a process for prospecting?
  4. Are you qualifying them?
